I agree, as you can see if you read what I said, highlighted in my last post. But it is like a new language when you have to learn it to use it, even though you already know english.

We're not talking about contractions per se, but spelling mistakes, you know, the kind we usually make when we are typing along and not thinking we have to be perfect. My point is that those mistakes are a by-product of normal conversive speech. Some may even look ridiculous in retrospect, but since it's not a conversation that we believe requires perfection, we let things go. Of course, if we were talking to the Queen or submitting a book to a publisher, we would make sure to be perfect. But in places like here, our minds don't believe it's important. that's what I mean by normal conversive language vs suit and tie communication, where we put extra effort into appearing verbally perfect.

Text to a pal and this forum... depends the way you talk to your pal. I'm inclined to say not really, because there you're texting and here, even if we make mistakes, we're not texting; just trying to communicate quickly and understandably.

Since 'doesn't' sounds the same when spoken as 'does'nt', you have to know which is correct. On a writing site, if you consistently spell something wrong, it will lead to your posts being taken less seriously. As writers, we should aim for good writing all the time. Clearly we are all going to make the odd mistake, but posting comments is still writing. It is one reason I take exception to people who reduce the language in their posts to abbreviations. Do me the courtesy of assuming I can read whole words and well-constructed sentences.

If you look, you can see that I've written in both ways. This is only a conversation to me so I'm not particular to be perfect here. But if you don't like distinct things like you describe, I'll be happy to avoid them in future. However, I still reserve the right to write as casually as I like, so long as it's understandable, which doesn't mean I can't write perfect when I want to. Not going to be stereotyped as either prim or priss.

I think that could be said of many a conversation - needing tact that is. It was certainly handled better than what is often seen in parliment! Now they really do behave like children. And damn, before I accidentally change the subject to politics, now must think of another topic.. err... erm... nice weather we're having lately, right?

I'll talk about the weather later but first I'll discuss the earlier part of what you said:

So true, I can't even begin to imagine how many problems would be solved, not to mention prevented, if people would just engage in honest, tactful communication. But to do that people have to first gain the experience to think clearly with reason and that is probably the hardest part of all. But our ancestors fought for understanding to reach where it is today and in time, I think we'll all learn to use it. Which coincidentally brings to mind another similar issue because of a letter I'm reading.

Having the understanding to use it also means knowing how to use good communication constructively for good. I'm just reading this junk letter I received supposedly from an author and CEO of a global investment firm (you were talking about politicians, well this is similar). He oozes congratulations and charm to convince me to order a book of his, which coincidentally, happens to be free if I order now. He tries to make me feel like if I'd just won the lottery. The catch of course is he wants me to fill out an info sheet so he can send more junk mail. And what's in the book? According to him it shows:

Why investment losses should be renamed investment gains.
Why high unemployment is not bad.
Why massive trade deficits can be great for stocks.
Why I shouldn't worry about government debt. (Who's worrying? It's their debt. I'm just a concerned observer.)
How if I already have lots of money, with his investment company, I could make lots more.

More? I remember when interest rates on deposits were well over 5% compared to their current less than 0.5% and this guy has the nerve to say all the wrong things in business and government are actually good for people. For him maybe, not so for ordinary people and of that I'm 100% positive. No matter how slick he sells his idea, it won't make it right. But the good communication will probably hook some ordinary people whose powers of baloney detection are not as developed, just enough for him to afford another private Cessna at the expense of some family's mortgage payment. What a sad use of communicative skills.

About the weather, it rained today, giving a well needed relief from the heat. Perfect for my newly planted rose stems, not so perfect for the rose bushes who are not fond of humidity on their leaves. Makes them spotty and yellow.

Ah yes, the age old scam. It is a good example of how with the right communication, you can lure people in. Luckily there is a growing awareness of things like this so many people are growing wise to it now. Though there will always be those who buy into these schemes.

It really does go to show just how language can be used. And a good writer must definitely be able to harness a tool such as language and communication.

OK, Xean, you are exonerated.
Tried to do things too quickly, as the wife's always telling me.

You've heard me say it before, David, so I don't know why you would feel pilloried now. If you want to respond to something I've said - I don't give a hoot when you're talking to somebody else - I'd like to think you've made the time to do so. If you give me one of your truncated responses, it requires me to spend extra time trying to guess what you mean. We're not on texting terms, so is it too much to expect that you might write your reply out in full?
