Quote: nhemyers, Tuesday, 22 Nov 2011 22:21I've wanted to say to all these reviewers who put a personal take on their reviews and write as though it's the only truth and the only way, don't be so absolute. Read some more. Read different styles of writing. For those who tell me, "Don't use so many adjectives", here's a quote from Scruples 2 by Judith Kranz. Kranz is the third best selling novelist of all time. "Especially in her condition, her incredible condition, her excessively interesting, newly discovered condition that was still a secret." (P.4) How many adjectives are in one sentence? How much was Kranz's advance per book? Roughly $3.5 mil. And oh, yes; she had pages without diagologue and shifting (simultaneous) POVs! So does John Grisham. Just wanted to say that I understand exactly where you are coming from. I've just had a look at the work of an author who gave me his advice/opinion. He told me that my sentences are too long. I write for adults. He writes for 'teenagers', but to my eye, it looked to be sutiable for the 8-12yr old. He advised me that my characters needed to be developed more - he wanted to know everything about them within the limits of the 7000 words this site permits - so, I ask - why the heck bother writing the rest of the book? Discovering a character's traits as one goes along is apparently too boring? His attention 'wandered' because my chapters are too long. I spent a great deal of time researching word count and chapter length of adult... repeat adult... fantasy/speculative fiction. Most have chapters of at least 7000 words. Frequently longer. He advised me to use an online editing package to pick up errors. I did so, immediately. The software was useful in some respects, ridiculous in others. Apparently words with more than 4 syllables are just too difficult for readers to comprehend.... In the very first sentence of his work, he made the exact error he had picked me out for. So - reviews that offer 'advice' of this sort are welcome, if the reviewer has the skill to apply them to their own works of writing genius.

I think it's probably best if you disconnect his writing ability from what are actually fairly salient points about your submission. I took a brief look and could see a lot of what he mentioned, but unfortunately he didn't really give you the kind of instruction of how to improve it directly. If I have time later I'll do a FW for you and pick out all of the bits I'd make changes to. I've taught writing for a long time - since 2004. I've learned more advising others of what not to do that I ever did trying to work it out just for myself. Being immersed in other people's writing really helped and I think now I'm just about 'shelf worthy' although I've yet to get that golden moment where someone decides I'm 'shelf worthy' too... So, I wouldn't discount reviews because the reviewer isn't (in your view) as good a writer as you are. I would discount them because the point is wrong or irrelevant. If you feel you can't quite make that judgement, wait for the next review and see if the new reader agrees with what's been said before.

Even readers who do not write can identify areas that don't work. Something can be taken from every review.

I hope you're okay after my review of your piece? I don't pull punches because I respect the people who have written the pieces and appreciate that we're all here to get better. The positives are also worth focusing on as they give a guide. If there's anything you'd like me to give you more detail on, just say. Of course, similarly, if you don't think my points are valid, then feel free to ignore them. There's also the amazing fact that a book is written. That in itself is worthy of a lot of respect.

Just got your email, glad it all helped. Am cringing at some of the typos in my review though. My excuse? It's been a long day.

Do you fancy a Freewill swap, Allen/Durith? I'm due to hand in my assignment in a few weeks, and by the looks of things, you are the guy to see about MA work! Sure as hell wish we'd had a fantasy module on ours... James

Happy to help James. I'll take a look tomorrow. If you could wait on reciprocating until I've posted up "The Dragon of Wisimir", that'd be great. FW's on that would be really helpful and appreciated. Should be up during the middle of the week.
