Quote: richie_d, Wednesday, 9 Jul 2008 13:13Zemer: The synopsis for your novel is the best I've ever read on this site. Don't be shy about posting here! Thank you so much for that, Richie. I was actually afraid it might be putting people off. I uploaded it on July 1st and have only had one review despite it being assigned to two members most of the time. Oh, and one Free Will, gratefully recieved. I know the theme is one people might shy away from but I notice there are other stories with emotive subjects - like cancer etc - which are regularly being reviewed. I have considered putting up the one page synopsis but am scared it might make things worse! Frighten the horses! Sorry, I think this is hi-jacking but would be really grateful for advice. And yes, I am a bit shy.

Don't be shy. Writers should be bold. Probably should be arrogant too. Long may Mat hang around pontificating. An admiirable trait.

Quote: mathewferguson, Wednesday, 9 Jul 2008 02:42On to writing/editing/publishing. The question I would have asked of me is this "If you've worked in publishing for so long and work as a writer then why don't you have your own original fiction published? Huh? Mr Big I'm-a-writer? Tell us." No one has asked this of me. May it be a comfort to you that I had exactly this question written in a reply box, but I thought you're defensive enough already.
Keep writing.

First thing i can actually remember writing: Michelin Manor, a fifty page draft about a ley line curse, a girl called Lily, warrior fairies and generally nice fairy-tale critters gone completely bad

First short story I can remember writing was a ghost story. It was published in the school magazine and I waited nearly forty years for another publication success.

The first short-story I recall writing? Well, here it is, in full, in all its naivete, taken verbatim from an old school book. September 13th, 1966. (I was 10 years old) The Angry Farmer Bill and John were nearly always snooping around the farmer's barns; it somehow fascinated them. They thought they were haunted because they kept on hearing voices. Farmer Picken wasn't aware of this, but his wife was, and so finally she had to tell him. "Henry, did you you know that two young boys have been playing around your barns?" Henry answered flabbergasted, "What? Just wait till I get my hands on them." "Oh, don't do anything violent to them, they don't do any harm," pleaded his wife. "Out of my way woman. I'm going to teach them a lesson they will never forget," he bellowed. "Oh no," sighed Mary. Suddenly a bellowing voice shouted across a field. "Oi! Get away from my barns!" He was concentrating so hard on telling them off his hand slipped and hit the brake lever and he went flying out of his seat. He started cursing. When he got to his feet he found the boys had gone. So, he got back into his tractor and took it for granted that they wouldn't come back. But he was wrong, they were back the next day. Bill said, "I hope we don't get caught by ol' Picki again today." "I agree," said John. [Teacher's comment: Very Good. You have expressed yourself well.]

Am I missing something here? Is there anyone else out there that doesn't see all this nastiness in what Matt...Mat...Matthew...Mathew, posts? I am befuddled and bemused! Is it in his reviews? I haven't had one yet, should I brace myself? The only time I saw anything like you all describe was in the aforementioned post that linked angelscribe to a point he was making, it wasn't nice and i told him so. At other times I saw a brilliant argument with, was she called, Mildred? Anyway, I think I know what she was really called. Several postings containing good advice. Postings giving us his opinion on threads, I didn't agree with them all, but, hey ho! Postings giving ideas to work our writing muscle, which I enjoy. Advice answering to others querries. Joining in to try to help when others were stuck on how to write something. What forum is he on where he provokes so much sarcasm and 'we all think' (another sweeping statement) the same about his manner, in such strong terms? And other than the angelscribe incident, where has he been cruel? Anyway, I don't know why I am getting my knickers in a twist, he'll be up soon and giving you all what for in his own special way. I'm off to sit in a corner and ponder on the wonders of it all. I have a nice little red to help me. I'm not in work so can indulge. Cheers.

Zemer: I can't really give you any advice because your synopsis is so strong--can't think of how to improve it. Perhaps things are just slow at the moment--it is the beginning of summer. Stick in there!

I would caution to judge on anybody because of postings on a mb. I am not jealous of Mat's experience and exposure, but I am grateful that he was/is willing to share. However I'd like to know about his true motivation to spend so much time at the forum. (or is it in? on? I'm having my confuzzled day) A forum is only as good as its members' contributions, and nobody should forget that our judgement requires the visual of body language. Yup, we writers know this, don't we? Show don't tell comes right from our desire to see. My first writing, besides school essays, was a whodunnit, hand written. My schoolmates loved it and asked for more. uh oh.
Keep writing.

I'm sorry, Mat, for any disrespect. We don't have to agree to get along.

The first story I wrote was about about 36 years ago. I got a gold star for it from Sister Mary Gorreti, and it was called The Advanchures of Joe VOMOSH. I recently remembered the story, and wrote a new version: and it got in the YWO Top Ten. Now, if only I could remember what the second story I wrote was....

I have a very old friend – my best and (nearly) oldest chum – who wrote an essay once when he was at school. He put his heart and soul into it. When the essay marks were handed out, his English master announced to the class that it was a wonderful piece of writing but, clearly, it couldn’t have been written by my friend as it was far too good. So he must have plagiarised. Said that to the entire class. He (friend) never really tried 'writing' anything again. He was around fifteen/sixteen years of age at the time.
Don’t worry too much. He had/has a great brain, and he qualified as the gold medal student in his university in his chosen profession. He subsequently made a pile of money and is highly regarded (internationally) in said profession. He’s semi-retired now.
But he never tried to 'write' again.
True story. Goddamned teachers (some of them, anyway).
