Surely the point is that we shouldn't know how the system works, otherwise people could game it to their advnatage. If there's a random element, then that apes although imprecisely, the hit or miss nature of say who reads the titles in a publisher's a slush pile

Have now removed one version from the site... thank you to everyone who helped me shape up the opening of this novel, on which I was, I admit, really stuck.
