Had a quick look Lyn - still no flies buzzing in to lay their eggs in corpses. On the sense of smell issue, I wonder if it would be helpful if you had Emma suffer at least temporary loss of smell through the concussion. She'd notice it immediately as a loss and could be distressed over that so as not to notice other things.
Just a thought.

Did you read the right version? It says that there are flies in the blood/vomit. "dotted with flies"
As to smell, this guy was only killed a short time ago - so are you talking about rotting corpse smell? Other smells

If someone were walking up to a freshly killed human, by how many seconds would smell precede sight?

I'm the person with the bad nose and I've never seen a person killed by violence, but I see lots of dead woodchucks, deer etc. It takes a while for them to bloat and smell (to me anyway) - much more than a few hours. Even when they're covered with maggots I don't smell them until I'm close enough to see the maggots, but then, my nose...

Thanks for the very helpful review. I'd be happy to push the descriptions of everything further - I like to write to descriptions. I felt like everyone beat the shit out of me when i first came "too much description" - the scene where she robs the bodies on the battlefield, hasn't been on here as its past the 7000 words, is pretty disgusting. I do admit, I loathe blood and gore, I have been dragged kicking and screaming out of the necessity of veracity into writing such things. The way i write is to stand there and expereince the scene - whatever scene - and then I write down what I see (and what I smell which aint much) and so I really hate standing there and looking at such gross things - ah, the tribulations of a writer.

I had no idea that Columbanus was the patron saint of Derry.

The reason he's Columbanus in the book because it is an homage to a novel by Ellis Peters (Brother Cadfael - A Morbid Taste for Bones) - he's been called that since 2009. I didn't just make this up to yank your chain, I swear.

Columbanus is the Latin version of Columb/Columba - Patron Saint of Derry (Doire Columcille) because he founded the monastery later to become this fair city before he went on to Iona to set up the Columbine Monks. There you are now. Absolutely fascinating.

Any relation to saintOrum, patron saint of Oklahoma, 10urC and North Dakota?
All I can say is: God help us if he ever gets elected.

Amazing how republicans from different nations can be so different. Do you really think one representative can make a difference to the great machine? Absenting Mr Deeds of course.
