Unlike you, I love Dickens but it was also very to the point for the beginning to establish the war. As an American, I know my compatriots likely know nothing about this period. We'll get into William of Malmesbury's views later.

Not that William was prejudiced in any way! But like you (I guess, judging from your synopsis), I think Robert of Gloucester should have claimed as the most competent person around. Ok, so his Dad was not in a position to marry his mum, but neither did his grandad's dad with fancy bit and that did William the Bastard very little harm as regards career development.

But as Grandpa William proved, when you showed up with an army, the bastard issue pales. Robert will get army, but as his kingmaker is an activist from the 21st century, it's gonna go a bit differently.

Will, by the way, I should have told you how thrilled I am that a real historian read this and didn't throw his computer against the wall in disgust. I'm not trained as an historian, and though most of the eventual readers probably won't care, I have approached my alternative history as if I'd have to defend its plausibility (if one is willing to accept the presence of a time traveller, that is) before a panel at the Battle Conference on Anglo-Norman Studies.
Might I call upon your professional expertise from time to time?
