"
A Delight The review title covers my opinion of these wonderful chapters but I shall attempt a more loquacious assesment.
It was a joy to read such intelligent, informed writing. The cultural references were exactly right for the time frame of the novel.
It was particularly interesting to read about the female character as she spoke about herself and then to fit that view together with her written expression of her life.
It is often difficult to adjust from one viewpoint to another when there are two seperate and distant main characters but the flow from one to another is perfectly achieved here.
The narrative voice is exactly as I like it, I do not enjoy didactic, controlling narrators who invade the story as an unwelcome and inappropriate controller. The narrator here is invisible and allows his characters full control of their own stories.
I should certainly be very happy to read more of this story and, indeed, would be most disappointed if I could not. MOST intriguing."

Synopsis
Ranging between Ceylon and Flanders, "Smoke Portrait" is the story of an unlikely correspondence between a young Englishwoman and a thirteen year-old boy in the 1930s. Their stories unfold against contrasting historical backdrops: the decline of Empire in Asia and the rise of fascism in Europe.
