I’m off to my daughter’s school in a minute. I’ve been invited to attend their book club this afternoon because they’ve been reading my first book, The Stones and the Shaman this term.

I wrote the book 4 years ago, so I re-read it at the weekend to remind myself of the finer details. Although there are many things I’d do differently if I wrote it today (adverbs - aagh!), I found I still liked the story. Hopefully the children did, too.

Feeling a bit excited, a bit terrified…

It went well.

I didn't know what to expect, but when I got there, the children acted out their favourite scenes from the book for me. They were so sweet and really put me at my ease. They'd also drawn wonderful pictures of yeti and dark, spooky caves. I may have rambled on a bit in the Q&A but I didn't notice any eyes glazing over.

Modesty forbids, but they all scored the book highly. All in all a good evening!

Kids can be a tough audience. Amazingly perceptive at times they're apt to ask awkward questions and refuse to be fobbed off with less than convincing answers.

Glad to hear you got out alive.

Yes, well done Claire. Maybe try the YWO book club next! Not many get out out of there without a hammering and that's the members as well as the books, lol.

YWO Book Club? That's possibly even scarier than a bunch of 10-year-olds.
