I've found these useful for tracking down those phrases we become enamoured of (mine was "zoomed in" when the characters were using binoculars. They were zooming in all the time!). Just paste in your work and off you go. I put in 16500 words and it didn't crash it so I'm not sure what the limit is. Phrase counterWord frequency counter:-)

Thanks. This raises a subject I've wondered about, which is how many people here are members of writewords and whether they think it's any good. I'd love to know as they charge for membership - it might not be much but it's enough when you're struggling anyway so it would be good to know if people think they get value out of it.

I was a member a few years back, but let it lapse. I didn't think it was worth the money, but it may have changed since then. Just had a quick look and they seem to do a month's free trial if you want to give it a go.

Oooo Ta, Mathew, I put in all 7K+ words of both my uploads and in GEBH, there were 2 'struggled against her bonds' very close together. So I'd better rewrite that!

I joined a few years ago. I decided that it wasn't quite for me, and it was very expensive for what I got, I thought. Most of what they offer can be obtained on other sites. I do pay for firstwriter.com though. It's not a lot and email alerts of new competitions, agencies and changes in agencies are really handy JR

there's an autocrit tool which does a good job pointing out weaknesses in your writing. Most of the features are for free. An even better method that may not be able to find terms you mentioned but doesn't cost you a thing is to use functions in word. For instance "was/were" indicate passive voice. Do "replace was with was/format/special/highlight" and hit replace all. All was/were are highlighted and jump at you. You can highlight all words you suspect to make trouble.

I'm stuck with not very nice claret - all that was on offer in the M&S £10 meal for two deal. Then I can go back to Chianti or something Italian.

Phrase counterWord frequency counter:-) Ever since these were mentioned in David Lodge's Changing Places I've wondered about them - thanks for pointing the way, Matthew. IIRC In Lodge's book, someone develops writer's block upon discovering their favourite word is "greasy". Mine is apparently "room" while my most used phrase is "in front of". So it seems my book (or at least its opening chapters) is filled with location pointers. While of no interest to anyone else, I find this fascinating as I used to be totally unobservant and my writing tutor was constantly trying to get me to put more geography into my work so readers could visualize scenes better. Maybe I've overdone it?
