If anyone hails from lovely Oxford or round about, I'll be reading from Johnny Mackintosh, probably talking about it and (hopefully) signing a few books in Blackwell's bookshop on Tuesday 12th August. If you don't know it, Blackwell's is an amazing place - from the outside it looks pretty small. Enter, find your way to the Norrington Room and a gigantic underground book cavern opens before you, making this the largest bookshop in Oxford and giving it a one-time entry in the Guinness Book of Records for the most books for sale in a single room (there's over three miles of shelf space). Sadly, my guess is I'll be up in the children's department.

For me it's a return to the city where I worked for Robert Maxwell and later OUP. The fun starts from 3pm. If anyone from YWO is there, please be sure to say hello.

Keith

Hi Laurie - officially I'm there from 3 till 5, so if you're nearby then I'd expect to still be around. I don't know which of Oxford's publishers you work for - there'll be a few OUPites coming along as that's one of my old haunts.

I'm also doing an interview on Radio Oxford early afternoon to try to generate some additional interest.

Do hope you can make it.

I work for Pearson Ed, previously Harcourt Education. It's quite a quick bus ride. I'll see if I can liberate myself early-ish.
Will you be live on Radio Oxford? One of our friends does a few thing with them. She doesn't work there anymore, she's become a guest now!

Aha - I was one of Pearson Ed's Computing publishers for seven years, but in the pre-Harcourt era. I started writing Johnny Mackintosh after they binned me off!

No I'm not live on Radio Oxford. I'll be on Jo Thoenes' show between 1 and 2pm, so we're pre-recording in the morning. Great if you are able to make it down and you will be going against the traffic.

Unfortunately I couldn't make it
I am very likely to be binned myself soon. I'm considering my options...

Good to meet Keith at the signing last night. No sign of any other YWOers there but the place seemed to be buzzing, and plenty of people were buying. Keith did a fantastic job of keeping everyone entertained with a mix of storytellinga nd bizarre spaceship creation.

All the best for the rest of the signing tour

Sorry that Oxfordia couldn't make it - personally I think s/he was put off by the few "light showers" we had

Great to meet you in Blackwell's, Tommi. Thanks so much for coming down and saying hi. I just read your crit - probably the wrong way round as I should have read the story first, but my deadline for book 2 is sadly looming large... But good luck with the writing (so many books on YWO!) - Oxford's a great place to be scribbling stories.

Laurie - sorry not to see you and if that happens remember that it's an occupational hazard of the industry and something you tend to look forward to as it can make up for the dreadful pay the rest of the time! Most people I know have been "binned off" at least twice - sadly I only got the one pay day, but at least it led to good things. I think we had half a dozen publishers from different companies come down and we wandered off to the pub after, so it was a shame you couldn't have come and made some contacts.

Ted - it was such a strange radio interview. I had answers ready to all the questions I presumed they'd ask, which would have included YWO if they wanted my advice for other writers. But they didn't even ever ask me about the book! They just wanted to know about life in Oxford...

As for the signing itself, as Tommi said it seemed to go well and I think Blackwell's must have sold about 40 copies, and they asked me to sign the remaining dozen or so (which is great as it means they can't now return them!). I did a couple of readings and had a drawing competition going throughout the afternoon. Sadly that's the only one in the diary, but I've got too much writing to do anyway so shall have to get my head down for the next few weeks.

Hi Keith

Very glad it went well, and wish you every success going forward. I know what you mean about interviews, I turned up for a BBC one at a London studio, and Barbara (Visinker) and JimmyB were in a studio in Scotland for the same show. The interview before me over ran so it turned out Barbara and Jimmy had carried the whole interview, and my carefully prepared answers about the site were not needed as the first question I was given was along the lines of 'So, tell us why you are boycotting Amazon?' ... "Erm, well, erm .."

I think I was on for two minutes, before trying to figure out the electronic gate exit and being advised by Tommy Cannon, who was in reception with Bobby Ball, on how to get out.

Ted
