Hi does anyone have any experience of publishing through Matador, or know of anyone who has published through them?

Thanks

I am at present using them to publish a book. So far they have been very helpful. they don't publish any old thing, and reject about 25% of material submitted to them. I will let you know how it goes.

What are the set-up costs and the final profit per copy, if you don't mind me asking?

Just copied this from their site, Sue. They seem to be a professional enough company, but I can't say that I've ever heard of them and I belong to many Indie groups. A couple of their writers appear to have have been signed by mainstream publishers. I think they're very expensive though. I certainly wouldn't pay it unless they could guarantee a good and price-inclusive marketing package. I'll stick with Ted and do the marketing myself. At least I've earned my money back on sales and am in profit now.

Example publication costs
Pre-press: the work required to turn a 180 page MS Word novel manuscript into print ready files (includes typesetting, design, ISBN, barcode, cover… everything to make the manuscript ready for printing): approx. £680.00

Printing is on top:
Printing 1 copy "on demand": £3.48
Printing 100 copies: £340.00
Printing 500 copies: £1080.00
Printing 1000 copies: £1540.00

Note that all books are different, and these prices are given as an indication only.

You can set the price per book at anything you want. they suggest 9.99, but I cgose 7.99. I mean who is going to buy a book by an unknown publisher for 9.99 when they can get a best selling novel at 7.99 or less? In any case, I forsee my sales largely being in my own area.

How many pages is your book? One of mine is 372 and retails at £8.99 and the other is 540 and retails at £10.99. Both have sold both here and abroad, but that's down to me working my backside off to market them. Now I have a following who are waiting for the final part of the trilogy. All three are Kindles and doing really well, making more money currently than the paperbacks. Kindling is free and worth doing when you feel ready. But do it yourself or your publisher may want some of your royalties and make sure you retain all your rights. Good luck. Pam.

Are these books of a pornographic nature, Pam?

Lawks - did you pay £680 for the set-up? YWO charge about £58, I think, and the quality is excellent but you do have to format it correctly yourself. It's more expensive per copy on demand, but if you don't need that many...
