Hi,

Having not done reviews before (but I have just cobbled two together so sorry peeps) could I ask if its possible to look up the stuff thats been uploaded by genre and see how others write reviews and score them. All I can see so far is the top 10 type thing - which are going to be the better ones.

I like the idea of the review system although I suspect I over rated one and under rated the other.

What do you do if you think the piece you are reviewing is (not to put too fine a point on it) crap?

thanks

Hi Mas

Welcome to the site. The charts will be expanding in the coming weeks so you'll be able to see more reviews. You can have a look in the meantime in the 'thanks' thread which often give thanks if a review is very constructive. Click on 'view authors books' below the name of the person doing the thanking. You can also have a look at the literary professional reviews in the professional reviews forum, which give a good idea of how to frame a review, including how they do it when there are various areas of a piece of writing that need some development.

As the saying goes on the review pages, 'there is always something positive to say about a piece of work'. What helps fellow writers is if you point to strengths and areas which can be improved, as the evidence collectively adds up for the writer about what works and what doesn't as they get more reviews in. Constructively pointing out areas which can be improved will help the author do that.

Members have said that doing reviews constructively also helps them think about and develop their own writing.

We wish you every success.

Ted

Hi mas,
Say what you feel, if it's crap to you, as long as it's constructive to the writer, we all need help and advice otherwise we wouldn't be here.

David.

Fair enough.

I just wondered how well the rating system works in practice. Things like ebay feedback sound good untill you realise that nobody wants to say anything negative about anyone. I wondered if the same effect applies and nobody ever gives a rating below 3 for example ?

It is far easier to comment on a good well written piece than it is to make useful comments on something that isnt so good or is a genre that does nothing for the reader - I'm not sure I could give meaningful comment on another elves & dragons saga for example.

Also it would be helpful to have some idea of how finished an author thinks the item is, or maybe if there are specific issues with it ? What do you think?

I've found the ratings system to work really well on the whole I think as writers know that by being honest they're assisting the writer and to damn someone with false praise is the worst thing they could do. Most writers seem to realise that and I notice those who wisely like the reviews that constructively take their work apart, and prefer this to the 'I liked this' type of review which says nothing. I think we're all after the learning curve to get better. The rewrites using feedback seem to do better on the whole.
