Well, I'm not entirely sure what specious means - but I swear that has happened to me a lot in cyberspace, and never in real life. (ie it is fact, not just for the sake of argument).

The important thing to remember is that none of you lot really exist. When I close the lid of my laptop, you all vanish. Or hibernate. Or something. Why should I care? I have real friends to worry about. They bleed when pricked, are capable of great joy and suffering. They are made of flesh and blood, not just patterns of text on a flickering screen. This discussion is interesting, but it only exists inside my mind, or at the very most inside my computer. Doesn't it?

Indeed.

My cynicism comes from experience, Perry. I will assume you aren't who you say you are unless I have proof to the contrary. But don't worry - you have a life away from here, haven't you?

The scarey thing is that it might be possible that the patterns of text on the screen might have certain similarities to the flesh and blood people. Ridiculous to think that way, of course, and I'm not insinuating in any way that this is the case (don't want to get carted off to the looney bin). Oh, this is the loony bin? But it only exists inside my head......

I'm the opposite to Sue. I presume that people are exactly who they say they are until proven otherwise. Sadly, many are fake, duplicitous and dishonest. But that's true for the real world just as much as the virtual one. Although maybe LP would have more difficulty posing as a woman in the real world. Or maybe not. Maybe he looks damn good in a dress. Who knows, eh?

Whenever a discussion becomes too heated and bile-filled on Mumsnet (yes, I used to post on there, before I kicked the habit) someone would point out:
"Remember, you are all just housewives in a chatroom"

Wise words for any forum I feel.

Best wishes Sulcus. Your posts were often incomprehensible to me, but always intriguing.

Yes, I expect LP is sitting at home in curlers, swigging gin as we speak.

Now there's an image to take with me to bed.

It's funny how the computer has taken over from the phone in providing instant and probably often erroneous images of people.
I remember once speaking to this contact for several months before I met him.
Conversation was basically one track - work - and as he had a deep Jamaican voice I conjured up the stereotype picture of a tank with Rastalocks & built like a shithouse door.
When I did meet him he turned out to be a puny little white man, with (if I remember rightly) thinning hair.
I think LP - if he really is SamBro -has to be a bit schizo, as per his characters.
He probably swigs a different drink & has different costumes depending on who he/she is that day.

I've been flat out amazed at this - after all, nobody would knock on your door and expect you to (for example) fix their car, or decorate their house for nothing - but in cyberspace, happens all the time!

Or write a book for them?
