How about this one - comp?

Quite pricey at £20 a pop.

£20 is too much and there be a large no of entries. I don't enter comps anymore and have never paid more than £5 to enter. The most I've won is £60 for a 1st prize but in the long run you'll probably pay that out in fees.

Just noticed you have to be previously unpublished as well. I'm wondering who has a collection of short stories yet hasn't been published.

I enter one a month and never pay more than £5 an entry. There are plenty around with first prizes of between £300 and £500. Over the years I've managed to come out on top, have some fun and sell a few pieces through contacts made.

I'm working on something for this one at the moment. It's for no more than 1500 words, prizes are £300, £100 and £50 with a worthwhile judge which I consider important. I was long-listed in their last comp as were two other YWO members, and am hoping to improve on that this time around. It's a good site for writers with plenty of interesting articles.

Ta for the linky, DC.

I'm thinking about entering a few comps to get my cv off the ground. I tried subbing a few shorts to places via duotrope some time ago but without success. I found the whole process so blahhhh and haven't been back. Lazy.

And, Draig, I have loads of shorts clogging up my files. None of them have been published. Maybe anybody who is any good is already published and that'll give me a smidgeon of a chance.

I do hate parting with my money though. I had to earn it. See? Lazy.

You're welcome, chickin. Well done for keeping the latest spammer at bay in at least one forum!

To correct myself; erict was actually short-listed and dancingsue had one Hon Mention and one long-listed in that comp.

As I said, I find it fun and it can lead to other things - a friend got her first agent through a comp win - but never under-estimate the opposition!

Good grief no.

But I see the need to be 'unpublished' as a good thing in this instance. Though having nipped over and had another butchers, it does say individual stories can have been published which ups the anti somewhat.

I figured if it was a standard 'never been published' it would put the likes of DS out the running. Apparently not, though.

In fact, it now looks almost impossible to win as they're not even read anonymously.

Oh well.

Ah, I didn't see that. Always pays to check the smallprint. I'd say go for it. Better to regret something you have done than to regret something you haven't.

Worth the checking is the fact that this is a family set-up and that the judge is a relatively unknown poet. The publishing references given all operate off the same web template.

The promotional aspect looks impressive but the cv is lacking. £20 is far too much to be asking for such an unestablished competition with only one prize of £1000. Try the Yeovil.
