Interestingly, the narrative voice never seems to lose the pleasant, confiding tone. I think the character of Helen shines as a thoroughly pleasant character. Although a victim, the narrative doesn't fall into tones of 'poor me'.
The only suggestion I have is for the second paragraph. After the first statement of "I remember", no need to repeat "I remember". It would flow well with linking by comma or simply description without those first two words being repeated ...
Your piece worked superbly ... A highly enjoyable read.

Synopsis
This is the first in a cycle of short stories inspired by family history. Set in the Scottish Highlands in the 19th Century, this is a fictional tale based on the true story of my great-great- great-grandmother.
