Am I alone in finding these so-called 'thank yous' somewhat yukky and self-serving? After all, if you get a good review it's presumably because someone enjoyed your hard-earned efforts. At least, that's how I feel when I read something that strikes me as rare and different - and I always feel then that the thanks should go the other way.
At present, it all (except for the vastly entertaining 'no thank-yous') reads as if somebody's been bought a nice lunch or jumper. Or as if one is trapped in some endless nightmare Oscar ceremony in which Gwynneth Paltrow has won all the prizes.

For me, the most useful part of this forum is a way to try to contact the reviewer if one has questions about what they wrote that you hope they can expand on. However, many members don't even use the MB at all. I didn't look at it when I first joined until I was searching all over the site for a way to contact a reviewer and stumbled on this forum. Then I realized that we were supposed to thank our reviewers. On another thread Malcolm suggested that people should have a waiting period before responding to reviewers here. It seems like a good idea to me. There are things reviewers have said that don't mean anything until weeks later. Sometimes the value of their comments, which are in the end a readers impression unbiased by being my best friend, is in what they didn't say, or what may be inferred by reading between the lines. And of course, some people offer knowledgeable critique well beyond the obligatory 100 words, and they have , at the very least, earned a thank you from me for caring enough to take the time to help a complete stranger. Just how much time I can well imagine, as I know how much effort it takes to write a long, detailed critique.

Search for Sally Field's Oscar win (1980? 1981?) on YouTube - Paltrow, Winslett et al are amateurs when it comes to sick-inducing Oscar acceptance speeches. PS She is a fine actress though, SF.

In answer to your question, I would think that you are possibly alone in continuing to read posts that you find “yukky and self serving”. I think that you may find a clue to the content of the forum within its title.

Have to admit I do go through them now and then to read the occasional howls of outrage and often interesting debates that follow when someone thinks they've had a raw deal from a reviewer.

You're not alone. Some of the gushing exchanges do often bring a little bit of sick to my throat. I know we're all supposed to think it's a lovely thing when reviewer and reviewee come together in perfect harmony. But I find some of the fawning platitudes rather false. 'Oh, you're so great.' 'No, you are.' 'You leave the Thank-You forum first.' 'No, you.' Still, each to their own. Overall, I'd rather have fawners than whingers. If you've got to whinge, do it somewhere else. x

Are you trying to be controversial, or funny? It strikes me as quite petty that you would go onto a 'Thank You' forum to complain about people saying 'Thank you' to those who have taken the time and trouble to write a review. Some of us do actually appreciate it.
Why does that bother you?

I don't have an issue with the 'thank yous' - politeness costs nothing, after all. There are a few who quite clearly have sundry ulterior motives, but 'twas ever thus. The posts that feck me off are where someone uses the forum to complain about (what I consider to be) a perfectly reasonable review, just because they don't like the marks they've been given and it's damaged their average. Then - as if with one voice - the massed ranks of YWO-ers jump on to the thread to say, "That happened to me and I just got Ted to remove it". I'm an Everton fan - can I just get the Premier League to remove our ten worst results this season, and award us the points we think we should have got, because then we could move up the table? I don't think so.

Not as a tactical tool to bump you up the charts. x
